Two Giant Nebula whales are floating in the vicinity of a gas giant and its three moons through the space. Ok, there are not whales, but rather related to plants . It is not really known whether this species evolved naturally or is possibly a creation of a high developed alien race.
These "whales" are able to use a bride broad spectrum of electromagnetic radiation for the energy synthesis, which is similar as plants use visible sunlight for the photosynthesis. They are able to reduce their metabolism and get water from asteroids or comets, live very long (thousands of years) and have a lenght up to 500 m. Usually they can be seen nearby gas giants.
Giant Nebular whales painted in MyPaint and Picture Publisher. I did not make it layout before, I just started painting. Background completely in Picture Publisher. This time I used more filters for the nebula and also a photo of clouds taken by me. The idea to use photographed clouds to create nebula I got from here: [link] The planetary surfaces are painted.
Thank you very much for you comments and faves. Constructive criticism is very welcome.
For all who are interested: Alien plants can possibly absorb other wavelengths for photosynthesis than red (maximum number of photons that reach the earth are red) and blue (high energy photons). [link]
Floating giant plant-animal symbiotes would be a better, more interesting description of these animals, like huge alien lichen, and don't forget, the carbohydrates, the starch that the plants store, would not be enough to sustain such a large animal, so it might need to prey on other, smaller animals, at least occasionally. But, since you already gave a description of how they feed, my suggestion really doesn't seem to matter much
That being said, I love the background, and also the idea of whale-like giants in the vastness of space. It seems to be the concept that many conceptual artists are working on
Thank you very much and your suggestion is very welcome. That gives me the possibility to reflect more about these creatures.
These "whales" are not fully developed yet, because I still have no idea how the energy synthesis, thus the conversion of electromagnetic energy (radiation) into chemical energy (similar to photo synthesis) can function, because it needs low molecular weight substances...as CO2, H2O for the photo synthesis. These creatures are however both...producer organisms like plants and destruents like fungi.
I think your idea there are symbionts is very nice, although I can imagine that this symbiotic is relationship with bacteria. These microorganism live anaerobically and can withstand strong radiation and cosmic rays. And they provide an additional contribution to the outer skin of the "whales", which could be partly the polysacharide chitin.
"...don't forget, the carbohydrates, the starch that the plants store, would not be enough to sustain such a large animal..." I agree with you it, such huge plant has problems with the metabolism.
It doesn't have movable limbs, only a kind of several impulsions to be moveable in space. Since it stays near gas giants and otherwise doesn't travel great distances it doesn't need a very strong impulsions..., haha, something what is known for the bombardier beetles would be nice.
It's just that I haven't much knowledge about biochemistry either, I'm just pulling things out of what little I know about nature, and from ideas of alien creatures that I've been creating at times. The symbiont idea and the slightly-carnivorous "whale" thing comes actually, from the lives of corals, with symbiotic algae, and being able to capture their own prey. The bacterial symbionts would be real extremophiles to live in such harsh environments as their hosts
